A prophecy is a prediction made by significant persons like chiefs, prophets, and priestly specialists in stories. Concerning Kamehameha, there are numerous prophecies concerning Kamehameha.
The most famous one prophecy tells of a bright light in the heavens with a tail like that of a bird, a falling star like Haley’s comet or not. It was an omen, nevertheless, of the person who would unite the island kingdoms into one.
It was at Kokoiki, the place Kamehameha was born that Keawemaʻuhili of Hilo was a witness. It was he who said, “It is best to pluck off the wauke shoot while still young” lest his authority be lost to him. He wanted to kill the prince which is the reason for baby Kamehameha to be secreted away by Naeʻole to ʻĀwini.
Also famous is the story about the Naha Stone, the one that Kamehameha lifted. This stone is presently in front of the library in Hilo, although it was originally from Pīnao Heiau and was brought there from Holoholokū, Kauaʻi. It was Kalaniwahine who predicted Kamehameha’s success in lifting the stone. Kamehameha said, “I have pushed Naha Stone, and the islands will be pushed by me, and I have moved the Naha Stone and all the islands will be moved under me.”
We all know, of course, that Kamehameha trained the martial arts under Kekūhaupiʻo. It was Laʻamea who predicted that Kamehameha’s readiness to unite the island kingdoms upon seeing the strength of the young chief. Kekūhaupiʻo predicted Kamehameha’s victory over Keōuakūʻahuʻula. His prophecy is found in the chanted text of Hikikauelia ka Malama. In the seventh verse, he shows how Puna is overturned before Kaʻū .
Kamehameha’s war priest was Holoʻae (Holoaʻe). He was the one to urge Kamehameha at Mokuʻōhai to refrain from attacking full force until after the sun turns. If he does that, the victory would be his and Kīwalaʻō would fail. That prophesy was fulfilled.
Oh reader, the truth is that regarding the division of the kingdom of Kalaniʻōpuʻu – the secular government was given to Kīwalaʻō and war god Kūkāʻilimoku was given to Kamehameha. This is not the story told in a movie just shown on the television.
